This is A Must See Spot When Visiting St. John

Easter is behind us as well as Winter High Season. Parking will be easier to find and people of St. John will smile just a bit more. I usually don’t tout restaurants or commercial places. But this place is unique and think it’s worthwhile to share with you.

This is the Windmill Bar and the views from here are absolutely awesome. If you like a laid-back time at the end of your beach day this is a great place and of course, evening sunsets are a must. The actual windmill was constructed during slave times of the 1700’s. You can walk in, peak around with a libation in your hand.

Getting here is easy. Take Centerline Road out of Cruz Bay and past Paradise Lumber on your left. A short way after you will see a couple of signs. On the right is Shambles another good hangout place and on your left the Windmill sign. Turn left, follow the dirt road where a local is sitting in a plastic chair. He’ll direct you, pay him a couple of bucks then walk about 100 yards and you have arrived.

Of course, I on the other hand, driving Rachel (my 23-year-old jeep named after an old girlfriend pay nothing). I’m considered a local and Rachel gets front row parking right at the door. And why not? She and I have been through three hurricanes, countless storms, moved concrete, rebar, lumber. Rachel is a like me plenty of dings and dents but we both just keep on going.

Don’t know why someone didn’t open this place before but it was not until 2020. You’re going to find a lot of colorful locals sprinkled in with some tourists.

I highly recommend this place if you ain’t lookin for 5-star dining and just want a good time while meeting new friends, this is the place.

SHAMELESS MARKETING

I have been saying this for the last six months so why stop now. Whenever you come to St. John regardless of where you stay - get your car rented first thing! See when this whole virus thing hit the fan two years ago, car rental companies did not upgrade their fleet. Consequently, coupled with a chip shortage the island car market is an absolute mess!

Now let’s talk about accommodations. Fortunately, I have been absolutely booked for every single night since last October at both Sopra Mare and Bordo Mare kinda like a squirrel with a mouthful of nuts. But now things are changing! I am pretty much open from late June Summer months through the end of the year. The ocean is warmer, less people, and yes, parking in town. Time to come and enjoy both my places. Of course, as returning guests you “will” get a discount.

I don’t know of another island owner except me, that provides each guest a Sam and Jacks complimentary first-class dinner including wine, bread, salad and main course. Sometimes it’s lasagna, eggplant, or possibly Stromboli depending on what the chef feels like cooking that day. But I can attest there is more than enough for you to enjoy after a long day of travel.

Now with a full stomach enjoy the brilliant sunset sink over St. Thomas elbows propped on the pool edge, glass of wine in hand, and all worries evaporate. Doesn’t get better than this.

PERSONAL

My life has been blessed in many ways. Oh, I can’t say it’s great every day and made more than my share of screwing up good things. Life to me is not about the destination it’s about the journey and partner I have had my journeys. Each one of them as I reflect back, allowed me to grow as a person while experiencing joy, heartbreak, terror, worry – I call it life and wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’ll “Leave The Lite On For You” at your island home – Bordo Mare or Sopra Mare.

You Don't Want To Make This Mistake When Visiting St. John

Is that you standing on the white sandy deserted beach? Or are you the person walking down the road on the left? – if you’re the one on the left then you’re outta your God Damn mind! This is definitely the time of the year to be gone from the East Coast. Temperature today on St. John is 79 degrees, sunny and another perfect day for a beach chair, cooler full of Heineken, and simply stare out at the perfect clear ocean while you forgot work, virus, masks, responsibilities, freezing cold and endless snow! Which beach is this? Naw, not gonna tell you! You tell me which one.  But a hint, it’s a pretty easy hike to it and usually deserted.

Whenever you come to St. John this year, regardless of where you stay - get your car rented first thing! See when this whole virus thing hit the fan two years ago, island guests temporarily stopped coming, the car rental companies did not upgrade and trade out their fleets. Coupled with a shortage of computer chips for new vehicles, the island car rental market is an absolute mess!
Possible solution – I maintain a list of about 30 agencies with vehicles. Give me an email and I’ll send it along to you. When you contact them be sure to call and talk to someone they do not respond well to emails and voice messages. Just an island thing. Sopra Mare has been rented every single night since Halloween 2021 all the way through May 14th of this year. But I still have a lot of summer weeks available right now.  Bordo Mare is the same way – been full every single night since September 27th, 2021 all the way now thru June 18th this year. I’m not bragging (gloating maybe just a little – thanks to all of you renting my places) but the “better” villas are often getting three/four inquiries for the same weeks. This leads to two things: lack of availability and a steady increase in villa prices due to high demand.
So, just sayin, book early or you’ll be left out in the cold just like that person in the picture above. Plane flights to St. Thomas are increasing daily and prices for the Summer aren’t crazy high yet. If you haven’t tried flights yet give Hopper.com a try and also matrix.itasoftware.com. I’ve used both in the past and they pretty much give the best prices – although with matrix you will need to get prices then go to the airlines website, you can’t book through matrix.

SUMMARY

I keep getting questions about the Dominican Republic so here’s an updated video of “Malibu 1” for you to enjoy and this 4,700 sq ft place is priced at $429,000.  Malibu 2 is currently under a sold contract and should close in the next 60 days.

You and your family stay safe and warm and don’t get a heart attack from shoveling the damn snow, I hate to lose even one of you readers.

I’ll “Leave The Lite On For You” at your island home – Bordo Mare or Sopra Mare.

Who Am I?

Over the years I’ve gotten this question probably more than any other and basically have ignored giving a response.  But just cause you keep asking I’ll gave you a small snippet.  For more you’ll have to read my biography coming out later this year. It will be the final book of three books I will have written.

I grew up basically without my parents.  They were divorced when I was eight and I lived with my grandparents most of the time till I was a mid-teenager.  I cared little for education, was rebellious and always in some minor trouble with the local cop.

I was very shy except around friends.  Got married way to young but have two beautiful successful children in spite of the bedlam my wife and I created during the divorce.

I worked for both IBM and Xerox for a number of years and at the age of forty struck out on my own.  I proceeded to make two fortunes and then lose both of them.  But with the third fortune I now had enough common sense to hold on to it.

After six different colleges over nine years I received a Bachelor’s Degree.  So, you can readily accept I’m not the brightest “bulb” in the string.  But the one trait I’ve always possessed above all else was persistence and the will, no determination, to not let any obstacle stand in my way of success.

I believe that’s enough of me for the moment but let me leave this quote with you from my first book “Keep Left” The Open Air Asylum Called St. John.

When you’re traveling on a small plane with the pilot’s door flapping open in the wind, there comes a moment when he shouts back to you “This is the point of no return, we can safely fly back and land or we can take our chances in reaching the destination.”

Throughout life, I always respond the same “GO FOR IT- CHARGE!”

St. John is fully open for business and I as well as other owners are seeing a substantial increase in reservations particularly for July and August.  So, if you’ve got the itch better scratch it while weeks are still available.
